Richmond North Yorkshire

From Low Up in the Air

ISBN  0 9511074 7X

Audrey Carr born above her grandmother’s large shop at 30 High Row, Richmond loves Richmond with a passion. Her early childhood was spent running wild in the alleys and wastes of the Market Place and riverside woods. Consequently, she knows the town like the back of her hand and has many memories of the interesting inhabitants. She also paints Richmond landscapes.

After her education at Richmond High School she took a training in Drama and English at Trent Park and eventually became a teacher of those subjects in London, then Winchester, then Northallerton Girls School, returning to Richmond to enjoy teaching at Richmond School.

“It seems as if I have been telling stories all my life,” she says. With a terrific imagination as a child, she was constantly called upon to entertain her fellow pupils in both classroom and air-raid shelter at the National School in Lombards Wynd during the war. Her stories came off the top of her head and were much enjoyed.

Expecting a baby when she had married and returned to Richmond, she wrote short stories and was Book Reviewer for the Northern Despatch with a strong readership. (No pay, but the reviewer was allowed to keep all the books which at intervals would be sold for 50p each to Darlington library).

She has been an editor and has written articles for literary magazines but likes writing about Richmond best of all.

The desire to produce a book about Richmond is usually triggered by and incident, a conversation or a look at an old postcard of map. Her curiosity leads to intriguing discoveries, which loves to share.

As a producer of books her imprint is AzteC. Out of the ten books under the name AzteC her favourites are 'You Must Remember This - Richmond and There Abouts During the War' and 'Time Goes By' about the rest of the 40’s after the war was over.

About the Book

This fascinating compilation spans the decades from 1927 to 1991. No matter what you read, what courses you take, what you learned at school, what your instincts tell you, there is always something else to be discovered behind the stoney old facade of Richmond. How we make these discoveries is a mystery. . just a matter of one thing leading to another before the flash of realisation takes place that causes a 'light' to come on that illuminates something that has always been a puzzle.

This book with its clear aerial photographs from low up in the air is probably going to provide some eager thinkers with some more clues about how the town developed and how the historic core has managed to remain whole since the 14th century.

Besides being a boon to historians both amateur and qualified, in this delightful book we have some idea of town life during the last few decades. The photographs in 'Richmond North Yorkshire From Low up in the Air' are best studied through a magnifying glass but this is not absolutely necessary. You may be amused or infuriated when you read some of the controversies that have taken place over the years. All in the past now.

Audrey Carr's brief texts are written to create the effect that she is just chatting to the reader, sharing her knowledge and drawing out new ideas.
