Brian Pike

Brian Pike's deceptively simple, jewel-like pictures are unique, both in subject matter and in style.

Using special mixed-media techniques of his own devising, Brian creates vibrant, subtle, smouldering colours and lustrous enamelled surfaces that are reminiscent of the rich glazes of studio ceramics or the surfaces of weathered metals. The tones shift according to the play of the light, making his paintings impossible to reproduce accurately in print or photographs.

His themes are equally individual, and intensely personal. Working with imagery that springs directly from his subconscious mind he offers a series of glimpses of his own idiosyncratic, constantly evolving world, with its ever-expanding cast of odd characters and its own elusive logic.

Although he chooses to work on a modest, intimate scale, the simple, stripped-down forms give his paintings a visual impact out of proportion to their size. And whilst there’s often a strong element of subversive humour in his pictures, there are darker, more melancholy currents beneath the surface.

Brian has worked as a professional artist in the Richmond area for over ten years. His work is in private and corporate collections in the UK, Europe and the USA, and his exhibition sponsors include Vodafone plc. In addition to painting, he has also been involved in printmaking, digital artwork and photographic projects.
