Nursery Children have a Smashing Time (2 Oct 2009)
Children from a Richmond nursery were jumping for joy when they heard they were taking part in a national competition.
The Ridgeway Day Nursery children got to spend the afternoon in the outdoor play area squashing and smashing cartons. The nursery had joined forces with Richmondshire District Council to find the most unusual way of squashing cartons.
The council is taking part in the Tetra Pak run competition which aims to boost recycling of drinks cartons by encouraging people to squash cartons before they are placed in recycling bins. According to tests three times more cartons could be fitted into bring banks if they were all squashed flat first!
Nursery manager, Isobel Hardy, who is very keen to encourage children to recycle, said: “We used as many recycled materials as we could when we created our outdoor play area."
“The pre-school children are really enjoying the topic of recycling and we had lots of fun coming up with ideas on how to crush the cartons.”
Councillor Tony Duff, spokesperson for green living added: “If the children can squash successfully then so can the grown ups! We want everyone to squash hard and save money.”
To enter the competition send a video clip of your carton squashing antics to www.howdoyousquashyours.co.uk by November 1. Prizes on offer include a ‘chance of a lifetime’ place on an exciting international environmental adventure – from a wildlife conservation trip with elephants in South Africa to volunteering with turtles in Panama; an Eco TV, 50 DVDs and a supply of wine or smoothies in Tetra-Pak cartons.
Paper based liquid food and drink cartons can be recycled at banks at Tesco, Catterick Garrison; Brompton-on-Swale; Leyburn Car park; the Co-op and Nuns Close, Richmond - on average they collect around 11 tonnes each year. Once collected they are re-used for a range of products from plasterboard liners to high strength paper bags and envelopes.
