Theatre Launches Story Project (20 Oct 2009)
This month The Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond launched Stories Alive! - a story-writing and telling project for schools, which will run from now until next summer.
Pupils and teachers from North Yorkshire are being invited to come and look around the theatre, to tour the town and the Richmondshire Museum and to set about writing imaginative stories that involve the town in some way. In the summer these pupils are being given the unique opportunity to read or perform their own story in the Theatre - or even have their stories performed by members of the Georgian’s own Youth Theatre.
Present at the launch were writers Anne Fine, previous children’s book laureate, Margaret Barry of Simon and the Witch fame, Brian Alderson, the children’s books critic and Kate Edwards, Chief Executive of Seven Stories, the National Centre for Children’s Books. All agreed that story-telling is an important way of learning and that this theatre-led initiative is creating a wonderful opportunity for schools and pupils to engage first hand in making stories.
The theatre has prepared a short CD about the project, how to approach story telling, using information about the theatre and the town to help turn facts into imaginative ideas. Tours of the town and theatre will be available in November and the performance dates will be in June 2010. The project is sponsored by the Friends of The Georgian Theatre Royal and supported by Castle Hill Books of Richmond
Education officer at The Georgian Theatre Royal, Chris Wellings, said: “We launched the idea during Richmond’s highly successful Walking & Book Festival. Stories Alive! is a remarkable opportunity to experience theatre first hand – and at no expense to the schools involved!”
