Lile Close Development Under Way (11 Dec 2009)
Demolition work has started on ‘outdated’ sheltered housing in Richmond to make way for a £5 million new development.
The Lile Close development will provide 39 two-bedroom apartments for the elderly but also include facilities such as a hairdressing salon, restaurant, resource room and sensory room, which will be open to the community.
Developed by Housing 21 in partnership with Richmondshire District Council and the county council, the scheme will provide residents with independent living as well as 24-hour care and support, should they need it.
Clare Hemming, development programme manager for Housing 21, said: “As well as providing homes for older people, this new scheme will provide a valuable resource for other older people living nearby.”
The building will be finished in stone to complement the surrounding area and will comply with guidelines to ensure that ten per cent of the energy used will be from renewable sources.
Councillor Peter Wood, Richmondshire District Council’s spokesperson on housing, said: “This is going to be an outstanding development for Richmondshire, providing our residents with a great facility.”
