Station Auction is a Huge Success (15 Mar 2010)
A year long project culminating in a silent auction at The Station, Richmond has been hailed a huge success.
The Wall to Wall auction which ran throughout the month of February raised nearly £30,000 for The Station charity. As bidding came to a close, a big screen was set up in the venue to allow people to follow online bidding and make their bids on their chosen piece.
A range of celebrities and personalities including Sir Ben Kingsley, Sir Michael Parkinson, Kate Moss and William Hague had donated some of the artwork. Well-known artists such as Mackenzie Thorpe, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Joe Cornish and Damien Hirst had also donated some pieces.
The most successful piece was a painting by Mackenzie Thorpe called Wall to Wall which was painted especially for the auction and raised £7,000. A painting donated by Prince Charles who is a keen supporter of The Station raised £4,000.
Organiser Donald Cline said: “It all went very well. Besides the fact that it was incredibly busy, things went to plan and we were able to sort out bids from online and in person. The event has spread worldwide thanks to the internet and one man from New York actually bought three paintings without ever seeing them. He has visited The Station before and wanted to support us.
“This has been a wonderful event that has been really well supported to raise money for The Station and to keep it going.”
