Makeover at the Museum (31 Mar 2010)
Richmond’s local history museum is about to open its doors for the new season with a new look for its most popular exhibit.
The James Herriot vet’s surgery from the TV series “All Creatures Great and Small” has been given a makeover during the closed winter period. The stage sets which were used for the TV programme were sold to the museum after the series ended in 1980.
New exhibits include presentations about Robert Hey, a local man who invented a submarine escape device, and Red Cross hospitals in Richmond during the First World War.
Later in the season a listening centre will allow visitors to hear recordings of local people talking about times past.
Richmondshire Museum was founded in 1974 by the Soroptimists of Richmond and the Dales; it opened its doors in 1978 in a former joiner's workshop, and with the help of donations and volunteers has continually expanded ever since.
The museum, in Ryders Wynd, opens for the new season on Thursday 1st April and is open from 10.30 am – 4.00 pm. For more information about the museum visit www.richmondshiremuseum.org.uk
