Brompton Lakes in RICS Shortlist (13 Apr 2010)
The second phase of a development of innovative ‘green’ holiday lodges on the outskirts of Richmond is in the running for a competition to celebrate the best of the region’s building products.
Brompton Lakes – situated two miles east of the town at the site of some former fishing lakes – makes two appearances in the shortlist for the prestigious Royal Institution of Charted Surveyors (RICS) Pro Yorkshire Awards 2010 in the Tourism & Leisure and Design & Innovation categories.
The scheme is designed to recognise projects, which have made a positive contribution to property, construction and the environment, and aims to celebrate Yorkshire and its diversity.
The Brompton Lakes development, which is proving very popular with holidaymakers, features 20 luxury lodge-style holiday homes with lake-side frontage and exclusive access and fishing rights to the River Swale.
The final ten lodges (bringing the total number up to 20) were completed in September 2009 and it is this second phase of the development that is being considered for the RICS Pro-Yorkshire Awards 2010.
Designed by SDS Design – a company specialising in eco-friendly construction – the three-bedroom lodges offer the latest in green building techniques and are built entirely out of wood, glass and other sustainable products.
Green features include living plant roofs, large solar gain glass panels and – one of the first of its kind in the UK – an innovative geo-thermal heating system which draws energy from the lakes themselves.
Owner and developer of Brompton Lakes, Roy Stephenson, is delighted that the second phase of the development features so prominently on the RICS shortlist. “It is very rewarding to have our project recognised by an organisation like RICS. We wanted to create a top quality holiday destination that would have something for everyone from couples enjoying a peaceful getaway to families looking for an active break.
“It is hoped that bringing holiday makers to the site will not only enhance the area’s popularity as a tourist destination but will also have a positive economic impact on the local community and businesses,” he added.
Colin Harrap, Chairman of the RICS Yorkshire and Humberside judging panel, said: ‘’Once again the tremendous variety and high standard of projects has far exceeded our expectations, which is a true testament to the resilience and excellence of Yorkshire and Humberside's property and construction professionals."
The results of the competition will be announced at the RICS Gala Dinner at The Pavillion in Leeds on 14 May. The entries will be judged across eight categories – Building Conservation, Commercial, Community Benefit, Design & Innovation, Regeneration, Residential, Sustainability, Tourism & Leisure. Other shortlisted projects include: Fielden Wharf (Todmorden); Old Cragg Hall Barn (Hebden Bridge); Roundhay Mansion (Leeds); The Ceramics Gallery (York); and The Lawrance (Harrogate).
