Golf Event in Memory of Local Businessman (20 Apr 2010)
A Golf Day has been organised at Richmond Golf Club in memory of local businessman David Reed.
The David Reed Memorial Golf Day, now in it’s 5th year, will be held on 16th July to raise money for The British Heart Foundation and The Prostate Cancer Charity.
David Reed ran the successful cheese making business Swaledale Cheese Company in Richmond until he died of a heart attack in 2005. He left a wife and two young children.
His brother, Paul Reed, said: “To help us come to terms with his death and to help prevent the same thing happening to other young families, we decided to raise some money for the charities by organising a golf day in his memory. This is our 5th year and all four previous events have proved to be both enjoyable and successful.”
Last year the event attracted 27 teams from all over the country but predominantly from North Yorkshire and Tyne and Wear. Initially the majority of the players attending were friends of David Reed or people who knew him through business, but latterly more players just wanting to support the two charities have added to their numbers.
Companies who regularly take part in the event are: Eaga Plc, Hanson Ltd, Swaledale Cheese Company, Randal Orchard Construction, Warmsure Ltd, DFS, Bruce Cook Roadstone, Print Demon Systems, Glenrose Construction, Acomb Construction, Wensledale Diary, Richmond Garage Services and Peacocks Cash and Carry.
Over the years the event has raised £11,136 for the charities. This year the organisers are hoping to involve more local companies who don’t necessarily play golf but would like to be involved by ‘sponsoring a hole.'
