The Annual Richmond Meet (28 May 2010)
The Presidents Ball at the Kings Head Hotel tonight marks the opening of the Richmond Meet festivities.
The annual Richmond Meet, now in its 118th year, has become a tradition in Richmond with many people coming from far and wide to enjoy the family friendly activities. Originally set up in 1892 as a cycling convention it has grown and developed into a family event not to be missed.
Maintaining its original heritage, cycling events dominate the weekend, culminating with the National Grass Track Championship at Richmond Cricket Club on Monday. Racing starts at 12pm prompt and there will also be children’s cycle races throughout the afternoon.
Other sporting events during the weekend will be six-a-side football tournaments at Earls Orchard football ground on Saturday starting at 11am.
On Sunday morning the Richmond Meet President’s Procession makes its way from Richmond Town Hall to St. Mary’s Parish Church for a Civic Service at 10am with invited Mayors and dignitaries from around the region.
Sunday afternoon sees an afternoon of fun and family frolics in Richmond’s Friary Gardens. Music, stalls and refreshments provided by the Richmond Meet Ladies Committee plus plenty of entertainment for all the family commences at 1.30pm. And for anyone who enjoys a good quiz Richmond’s Cricket Club is the place to be on Sunday evening at 8pm.
The highlight of the weekend for some is the Carnival Procession and Fancy Dress Parade on Monday morning. The parade starts at Nuns Close where judging starts at 9.30am. The parade makes its way to the Town Hall in the market place at 10am.
This year’s Richmond Meet president is Mr Stuart Parsons, a well-known figure in the town having been Mayor for Richmond 3 times. Mr Parsons, 47, said: “The weekend is a lot of fun for the whole family so come along and enjoy yourselves and don’t forget to give generously to the local charities.”
