The Swaledale Festival in Richmond (1 June 2010)
Three exceptional musical performances are to be held in Richmond next Wednesday, 9th June, courtesy of the Swaledale Festival.
Saxophonist Iain Ballamy, known to European jazz aficionados as 'the Fantastic Englishman', appears with Norwegian accordion star Stian Carstensen in 'The Little Radio' at the Georgian Theatre Royal at 5.00pm.
Guardian critic John Fordham wrote of this innovative and quirkily humorous pair: “Rarely has a jazz improvising duo sounded so together, yet at the same time inhabited such compatible but distinctive separate worlds as Ballamy and Carstensen... Warm and craftily lyrical. Delicious!”
An original and versatile performer, Ballamy is also an accomplished composer with numerous commissions to his name. He has toured extensively worldwide and appeared at most international festivals. He is the agony uncle for Jazz UK magazine with his column 'In the saxophonist's chair'.
Also appearing on Richmond Day is Jacob Heringman, one of the world's leading lute-players. This marks a change from his busy international schedule (he's just back from performing in China) because Jacob actually lives in Richmond but has never yet performed in his home town. His 3.00pm concert at Easby Church sold out fast, so he will do an additional performance of 'The Art of the Lute' at 1.00 pm, with Renaissance lute music by John Dowland, Hans Newsidler and Francesco da Milano.
Once again the Swaledale Festival welcomes the outstanding Northern Sinfonia to Richmond. Directed by Bradley Creswick, the orchestra will play works by Ravel, Mozart, Debussy and Britten, in a concert at 8.00pm in St Mary's Church, Richmond.
Tickets for these and other Swaledale Festival events are available from Richmond Tourist Information Centre, the Swaledale Festival Box Office on 01748 880019, and www.swaledale-festival.org.uk.
