Extreme Cellists Stop off in Richmond (23 July 2010)
The Extreme Cellists, known for their performances in out-of-the-ordinary places such as on cathedral rooftops and summits of mountains, will be stopping off in Richmond as they walk the Coast-to-Coast.
Between 24th July and 6th August 2010, the Cellists, 34 year old Jeremy Dawson and 50 year old Clare Wallace from Sheffield, and 30 year old James Rees from Ely in Cambridgeshire, will walk the famous Coast-to-Coast path, carrying their cellos and giving regular performances along the way.
The challenge begins in St Bees, Cumbria, and the walk, devised and made famous by Alfred Wainwright, covers 192 miles through the Lake District, across the Pennines, and across the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors national parks, before finishing in Robin Hood’s Bay near Whitby, North Yorkshire. On each of the 14 days of the walk, the Cellists will give three performances – at the beginning and end of each stage, as well as at least one more somewhere along the way.
The Coast-to-Coast path is notoriously challenging to walkers, even when not carrying large musical instruments, but the trio is undeterred. Cellist Jeremy says: “We’ve previously done challenges involving a lot of mountain climbing, and challenges involving daily endurance, but here we’re combining both into one! We’re sure that our training will pay off, though, and hope that people appreciate the challenge and help us raise in excess of £5,000 for the charities this year. Anyone who wants to come and hear our performances along the way, or even walk with us, is very welcome!”
The trio will be doing the walk in aid of the spinal cord injury charity, Aspire, and the children’s cancer charity, PACT. Beryl Welburn, PACT Co-ordinator says: "We are thrilled that The Extreme Cellists have chosen to raise money for PACT and we wish them all the best for their endurance walk and performances. It is wonderful that they are helping children with cancer and their families and the money raised will help make what is a very difficult time just that bit better."
Andrew Ogierman at Aspire says: “Each time we think the Extreme Cellists have reached their most extreme, they find another amazing challenge. The Coast-to-Coast looks like their toughest assignment yet but we are once again delighted that they have chosen to support Aspire and our work with people who have spinal cord injuries. Every £1 they raise really will help to make a difference.”
The Extreme Cellists will be arriving in Richmond on Sun 1st August and are looking for a suitable venue to give a short performance that evening after their ten-mile walk from Reeth.
