A Little Luxury in Richmond (29 July 2010)
A 17th century property on Castle Hill, Richmond has been extensively renovated and converted into a luxury bed and breakfast.
Olde Castle House opened its doors to guests earlier this month after owners Gordon and Susan Maughan spent 18 months restoring and refurbishing the property.
The house which has been in Mr Maughan’s family since 1973 had had a series of tenants in it over recent years and had become very run down and neglected, so the retired couple thought it was time to restore it to its former glory.
“We felt sad that it had been wrecked over the years and thought we should take on the challenge to put it back to how it was, to prove to ourselves that we could do it,” said Mrs Maughan.
The couple have sold their home in Brompton-on-Swale to fund the project and spared no expense in creating an elegant and luxurious bed and breakfast whilst still maintaining a lot of the original features of the house.
Mrs Maughan went on to say: “We have designed the 6 en-suite rooms for comfort and relaxation and have used the best quality fixtures and furnishings to achieve this.”
Gordon, 77, who is also a well-known artist in the town, added: “We have taken a bit of a risk with this new venture at our age but hopefully it will pay off. We had a very good weekend last weekend and all our guests left glowing comments in the visitors book!”
