Richmondshire Choral Society is a community choir, a society in which people come together to sing choral music for enjoyment.
There are normally about 65 members of the choir and we usually perform two concerts a year, one just before Christmas and a second in late April.
Occasionally we forgo our own spring concert to join with Darlington Choral Society to perform one of the larger choral works. These have included the Verdi's Requiem and Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. Our Christmas concert is highly regarded as one of the major features in Richmond's town celebrations, as much a part of the local scene as the tree in the square or the lights around the town.
As a society mainly catering for mature adults, we also take seriously our responsibilities to encourage younger people into choral singing. Whenever possible, we invite Richmond School and other schools to take part in our concerts, especially the Christmas concert. We have provided opportunities for talented young singers to perform as soloists with us and have had the Richmond School Flute Choir accompany us and perform on their own at our concerts.
The society is also a member of Making Music, formerly the National Federation of Music Societies.
