The George and Dragon is located in the village of Hudswell, Richmondshire and set in Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The pub has approximately an acre of gardens to the rear with magnificent views over the Swale valley; probably the best views of any pub in the whole of Swaledale.
It closed its doors on the 8th August 2008 and had stood empty for almost two years. Now it is open again, thanks to the efforts of eighty villagers and ninety other friends and supporters who joined Hudswell Community Pub Limited, the co-operative that has bought and renovated the George and Dragon.
The members of HCP Ltd have invested over £240,000 in the enterprise and together with grant aid of almost £65,000 these funds have been used to purchase and fully renovate the George and Dragon. It was officially re-opened by Richmond MP and Foreign Secretary William Hague on the 12th June 2010 and is now a traditional pub selling ales from local brewers, good quality food from local suppliers and providing a venue for traditional pub sports and pastimes, local events and celebrations, music and culture. The land at the rear of the pub has been developed as community allotments; there is a village library in the pub and free internet access. It is planned to run a shop from the premises selling local produce and basic supplies.
The re-opened ‘George and Dragon’ is now restored as a centre of social life for the village and as a thriving business. Why not call in for a pint or a meal?
Now that the ‘George and Dragon’ is re-opened locals and visitors alike are making use of its impressive facilities and enjoying good food and ale. HCP Ltd has appointed Jackie and Margaret Stubbs as the first tenants. They have an impressive program of events and are keen to cater for all tastes and all activities.
