Transition Richmond Yorkshire (TRY) is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes sustainable living
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to reduce our energy needs and develop Richmond as a more resilient and sustainable community.
We hope to achieve this by:
- raising awareness in Richmond of issues concerning climate change and peak oil;
- engaging and building networks with people and groups already active with these issues;
- providing a framework for an effective response to climate change and peak oil, including the eventual creation and implementation of an Energy Descent Action Plan;
- creating visible practical projects that will reduce our CO2 emissions, reduce our dependency on fossil fuels, and empower residents to participate.
We do this because a world using less energy and fewer resources will be more resilient and sustainable, providing a more hopeful future for our children. We are open to working with everyone. We welcome diversity and see it as a strength.
Our History
TRY was launched in November 2009 by a small group of Richmond residents who had been inspired by reading the Transition Handbook; 'transition' – in the specific sense – was an unfamiliar term to us, but we instantly recognised the goals of the movement. A short time afterwards we applied – successfully – to the Transition Network for Richmond to be recognised as a Transition Town.
Sometimese call ourselves Transition Richmond, sometimes Transition Richmond Yorkshire (because there are a lot of Richmonds around the world). Mostly we just call ourselves TRY – a name which says it all.
Our first year was used to start building mailing list, to screen films on climate change and transition topics, and to start a series of TRY Talks. In future we plan to set up interest groups in areas such as transport, energy, education and the arts – we've started with food growing.
