Jazz at the Georgian: Acoustic Triangle

Venue: Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond

7.30pm. Tickets: £8, £12, £15 (concessions £5, £10, £13)
ACOUSTIC TRIANGLE
Tim Garland - saxophones, bass clarinet
Gwilym Simcock - piano
Malcolm Creese - double bass
Acoustic Triangle performs un-amplified music which draws its influences from many different sources. The members of Acoustic Triangle are all jazz players with significant backgrounds in ‘classical music’ and more than a passing acquaintance with various folk idioms. This is reflected in their choice of material and in their approach to performing. Gwilym Simcock and Tim Garland, as well as being world-class instrumentalists, are highly talented composers. Acoustic Triangle have found greater room for creativity by introducing extended ‘through-composed’ pieces which incorporate improvisation, alongside the ‘theme and variations’ form which is more traditional in jazz. There is generally a focus on melody and harmonic movement, and less of an emphasis on groove-based rhythm. Natural sound is a priority; no microphones or amplifiers are employed at any Acoustic Triangle concerts.
“A trio of world-class virtuosi.... exquisitely passionate and inspired.” BBC Music Magazine

Part family drama, part fairy tale, The Winter’s Tale, in keeping with the spirit of the old principles of touring theatre, will present a small troupe of actors entertaining crowds with a stripped down version of Shakespeare’s magical story of jealousy, love and redemption.
Convincing himself of his wife’s infidelity, Leontes, King of Sicilia, is driven into a jealous rage. Leontes is unmoved despite the entreaties of his wife and a proclamation from the Oracle of Apollo. The disastrous consequences of Leontes actions reverberate across generations and national borders. Only his daughter, Perdita, left for dead in the wilds of Bohemia in her infancy, survives to redeem the tale.
Director John Dove will be revisiting the play after his hit production of The Winter’s Tale at the Globe Theatre in 2005.

Three Tales for Nishaat and The Comedy Of Errors

Venue: Georgian Theatre Royal

Time: 7.30pm
Tickets: £8 (Concessions £6)
Directed by Chris Wellings & Amanda Heitler
Little Nishaat is every sibling’s worst nightmare. Left to look after her one evening, Ansar, Rya and Khurram can’t get her to go to bed. Until that is, Khurram comes up with a plan. Each sibling will tell Nishaat a story she’s never heard before; then she’ll sleep. As they tell their stories, the folktales miraculously come to life. Of course, Nishaat has no intention of honouring her side of the bargain, but the stories have their own way of resolving the problem.
Three Tales for Nishaat has been written especially for the theatre’s Junior Youth Theatre and incorporates original re-tellings of folktales by Aaron Shepard.
Egeon of Syracuse has a problem; he's on a journey to find his missing twin sons and has ended up in the town of Ephesus. The problem? Ephesus and Syracuse are enemies and he's under sentence of death! Meanwhile, his son Antipholus keeps meeting strangers who claim to know him...
In this fast-paced adaptation, Shakespeare's farcical comedy of identical twins and misunderstanding is presented by the youth theatre’s 11-14 year old members.
Warning: this play contains Shakespearean language and scenes of cartoon violence!

All’s Well That Ends Well

Venue: Georgian Theatre Royal

Time: 7.30 pm
Tickets: £5.50 - £16 (£4.50 - £14)
Founded in 1976, Theatre Set-Up is the UK’s longest established outdoor touring Shakespeare company. This romantic adventure story tours to the Georgian Theatre Royal with the same small cast and minimal setting as Shakespeare's own company, The King's Men.
Granted the husband of her choice as reward for curing the King’s illness, Helena chooses the unwilling Bertram. Their different backgrounds cause problems with their romance but with typical ingenuity Helena eventually convinces Bertram to “love her dearly, ever, ever dearly.” All's well that ends well!
“This was Shakespeare in its purest form, yet cleverly made accessible to a modern audience.” The Stage.
For bookings please call 01748 825252, log on to www.digyorkshire.com or visit the theatre box office on Victoria Road, Richmond.

Friday 18th July

Falstaff

Venue: Georgian Theatre Royal

Time: 7.30 pm
Tickets: £5.50 - £16 (£4.50 - £14)
Spend an evening with Falstaff, Shakespeare’s most loveable rogue!
The critically acclaimed world premiere production comes to the UK direct from the National Arts Center’s sell-out season in Ottawa, Canada as part of its international tour.
Winner of The Guardian Newspaper Book Award, Robert Nye’s novel is a portrait of Shakespeare’s great comic character. Adapted for the stage as a one-man show, it paints a historical and humorous portrait of Great Britain seen through the eyes of the vigorous and unrepentant 81-year-old Falstaff who holds court one last-time and enjoys a bawdy evening at the Boars Head Tavern.
“The National Arts Center of Canada is one of the world’s great theatre companies.” BBC Radio.
Sponsored by Friends of the Georgian Theatre Royal. Friends Ticket Offer: 10% off full price tickets available from Box Office
For bookings please call 01748 825252, log on to www.digyorkshire.com or visit the theatre box office on Victoria Road, Richmond.

Saturday 19th July

Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf

Venue: Georgian Theatre Royal

Time: 7.30pm
Tickets: £4.50- £13
Written and performed by Toby Hadoke
Directed by Mark Attwood
Get out from behind that sofa and get aboard Toby Hadoke’s TARDIS on a trip through time – charting the rise, fall and rise again of a television legend. This delightful show is a personal, satirical and razor sharp comic odyssey from child to man, through obsession, joy and disappointment.
This award-winning comedian’s show is a must for anyone who’s ever had a passion for anything. An intimate knowledge of Doctor Who is not required, although a disdain for the BNP, football hooligans and Hollyoaks would be useful.
“Utterly hysterical look into the life of someone for whom sci-fi has made the world a better place. Hadoke does an expert job in spreading a bit of the Doctor’s joy to his audience.” ***** British Theatre Guide.
For bookings please call 01748 825252, log on to www.digyorkshire.com or visit the theatre box office on Victoria Road, Richmond.

Brassed Off

Venue: Georgian Theatre Royal

Time: 7.30pm
Tickets: £5 to £12
Directed by Warnock Kerr
Featuring the Leyburn Band
Adapted from the widely acclaimed film, Brassed Off is a touching and ruthless account of the closure of yet another Yorkshire coal mine. The news provokes a passionate and often humorous response from the miners and their families. What are the consequences for a community when the sole purpose of its existence is removed, and what happens to the brass band at its heart? The powerful story line, which explores important social issues, is made all the more emotionally intense by the passionate music of the Brass Band.
RADS and Leyburn Band join forces to make this production unmissable!
This play contains occasional strong language!
Presented by Richmond Amateur Dramatic Society in arrangement with Samuel French Ltd

Museum Week

Venue: Georgian Theatre Royal

Time: On the hour 10.00am – 4.00pm
Take a trip back in time to sample the delights of the Georgian Theatre Royal as it looked and felt in its earliest days. Let our authentically dressed guides transport you to 1788 when candlelight lit the dark, and drama filled the empty nights.
Tour the theatre stripped back to its bare essentials - wooden benches without the comfort of backs and cushions and with only the candle chandeliers lighting your way. Visit the machine room to see stage traps and winches, and our guides will demonstrate how shutters and grooves were used to change scenery. Enter and pay at the tiny original 1788 box office!
A replica of Britain’s oldest hand-painted scenery will be on stage for the whole week and the original will be on view in the museum.
Group tours can be booked in advance by contacting the Administration Office on 01748 823710.

Set in the East End of London in 1866, Carrots is based on the life of Dr Thomas Barnardo. It was here that the "Good Doctah" first encountered a group of orphans, including the boy Carrots, living on a roof-top of a disused warehouse. Appalled by all the squalor, human misery and the social injustices of the time, he was determined to help the less fortunate and opened his first little school in a broken down stable in Stepney.
Carrots is a story of compassion and the determination to succeed against all odds.
Supported by the Heritage School of Dance, Stockton-on-Tees, this new adaptation premieres in Richmond. Starring local talent winner as Carrots!

The Sleeping Beauty

Venue: Georgian Theatre Royal

Times: Various: please ask Box Office for full details
Tickets: £7- £17 (Adults); £7-£15 (OAPs / students); £7-£10 (children)
One of the world’s favourite fairy stories of all times, The Sleeping Beauty originated from Persia over a thousand years ago! Frenchman Charles Perrault wrote down various fairytales in 1697 – several of them later became pantomimes. The first pantomime version of The Sleeping Beauty was at Drury Lane in 1806 – just eighteen years after Richmond’s Georgian theatre was built. Two centuries later, PMA Productions take on the story.
A magical castle deep in the forest, a handsome prince, a beautiful sleeping princess, fairies and a very wicked witch all promise rather a special Christmas panto this year. Following huge success over the last four years, dancers from the Heritage School of Dance in Stockton-on-Tees support PMA’s professional cast.
Book your seats now to avoid disappointment!
