Secret Salons: A Georgian Musical Promenade
Venue: Various
Time: 6.30pm
Three fabulous concerts held at three of Richmond's exclusive Georgian gems!

Move leisurely between the gracious interiors of Culloden Tower, Temple Lodge and Millgate House where you will be entertained by music and words from the period.

Performances start at 6.30pm, 7.30pm and 8.30pm. Due to the salon-style configuration at each venue, tickets will be limited so early booking is advised.

The event is part of GeorgeFest18 and will raise funds for The Georgian Theatre Royal.

Culloden Tower: Open Weekend with the Landmark Trust
Venue: Culloden Tower
Time: 10.00am until 4.00pm
A rare chance to see inside this iconic Richmond building as part of GeorgeFest18.

Culloden Tower was built as a parkland ornament or folly in 1746. Restored by the Landmark Trust, it is now available to everyone for holidays and has fantastic panoramic views across the town and Swaledale.

A Walking Tour of Temple Grounds
Venue: Yorke Square Car Park
Time: 2.00pm
A guided walk as part of GeorgeFest18.

Led by historic landscape expert Val Hepworth, this walk (approx. 2 hours) will explore the historic designed landscapes and exteriors of Culloden Tower and Temple Lodge, taking in the attractive private Green Walk that links the two buildings. There is an incline up to Culloden Tower and stout footwear is advised. No dogs please.

At this interactive event, you'll learn how Georgians shook up the rigid rules of the aristocracy through face-to-face conversation and you'll experience, first-hand, soirees styles from the 1760s and 1770s.The University of York’s Dr Chloe Wigston Smith will reveal what made conversation tick in the eighteenth century. The answers may surprise you!

An entertaining talk that has all the intrigues of an Agatha Christie 'whodunnit'!

A diary from the 1760s by an unknown Richmond woman has recently been uncovered. We know exactly what she thought about shopping, ribbons, gardening and menfolk. But her true identity remains a mystery. All will be explained by Jane Hatcher and Bob Woodings – authors of a new book containing the diary.

Methodism and the Theatre: The Other War of the 18th Century!
Venue: The Georgian Theatre Royal (Paul Iles Learning Centre)

Find out why Methodists and thespians attacked each other for most of the second half of the 18th century.

The famous preacher George Whitefield was a particular target for satire, and he and Methodists were wickedly portrayed on stage by such writers as Samuel Foote. Ian Small (Chairman of the York Georgian Society) will explore how the two sides locked horns and how the theatre fought Methodism for the souls of the British people!

Richmond Town Hall was built in the 18th century to provide a setting in which balls and assemblies could take place. Come and join members of the Richmond Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society for a special afternoon Summer Assembly, which will provide a flavour of social dancing of the Georgian period and an appreciation of how the style has evolved to the present day. Refreshments will be available.

Talk: Sighing for a Soldier: the lure of the scarlet coattee
Venue: The Green Howards Museum

In this talk, the Museum’s Director, Lynda Powell looks at the pleasures, opportunities and pitfalls of life in the North York Militia.

“She saw all the glories of the camp; its tents stretched forth in beauteous uniformity of lines, crowded with the young and gay, and dazzling with scarlet; and to complete the view, she saw herself seated beneath a tent, tenderly flirting with at least six officers at once.” Jane Austen’s description of Lydia Bennet in ‘Pride and Prejudice’

The attentions of the local female population were just one of the attractions on offer to men serving with the North York Militia in the 1800s.

This Museum Talk is part of Richmond’s GeorgeFest18 programme.

Humphry Repton: An Exploration of Yorkshire's Georgian Landscapes
Venue: The Georgian Theatre Royal (Paul Iles Learning Centre)

The 9 Yorkshire commissions of the renowned English landscape gardener Humphry Repton spanned 20 years between 1790 and 1810.

To mark the publication of their new book, Patrick Eyres and Karen Lynch will be offering insights into these commissions that included Wentworth Woodhouse, Rudding Hall, Mulgrave Castle, Harewood House and Oulton Hall.
