MERCURY BRIDGE - THE REPAIRS  - a summary by PJ Welch - Mouchel North Yorkshire

Below is a full photographic record of the reconstruction of Mercury(Station) Bridge.

14 July 2000 - 3,000 tonnes of stone is placed in the river, test bore holes drilled.
22 July 2000 - Foundations for steel support, ground preparation.
31 July 2000 - Piling operation/preparations for steel work
August 2000
12-14 August 2000 - Piling operations/foundations almost complete
15-17 August 2000 - 300 tonne crane and support steel arrive and are manoeuvred into place
23-31 August 2000 - The support structure in place, surveys of the bridge commence - preparation for piling into central pier
September 2000
09-17 September 2000 - Piling operation begins from the top of the bridge
22-31 September 2000 - Piling operation starts at the foot of the central pier - work area flooded
October 2000
01 October 2000 - Piling operation complete - preparation for temporary bridge
05-10 October 2000 - Opening of the bridge to light traffic - central pier damaged foundations revealed
15 Oct-03 Nov 2000 - Cofferdam in place - new stone arrives. 27/10 Visit by William Hague MP - 03/11 Flooding slows work
November 2000
10-22 Nov 2000 - Stonework starts on the central pier. Costs go up to £2m
24-30 Nov 2000 - The central pier complete - work on the arches commences.
December 2000
03-07 Dec 2000 - Stonework on the arches makes progress.
08 - 17 Dec 2000 - Stonework on the arches almost complete. Concrete infilling starts. Bat roosts made. Preparation for opening.
21 Dec 2000 - Bridge open fully to traffic.
January 2001
Jan 2001 - A closer look at the new stone.
April 2001
April-May 2001 - The reinstatement of the site begins.
June 2001
June 2001 - One year later - anti-scouring measures and flood channels created with new footpaths.
July 2001
July 2001 - South side reinstatement work completed.
