A Richmond schoolgirl is fast becoming one of British Skiing’s most hopeful talents.
Almost a month after winning the 2013 British Childrens Giant Slalom Title in Meribel, France, Honor Clissold has eventually managed to conclude the season with a well deserved rest and the chance to get back into school mode, if only for a short time.
The young British Team skier, who is widely recognised as one of the most talented Under 18’s that Team GB has to offer, has recently finished her end of season training and recovery period and is now looking forward to the start of the next season where she will compete as a Junior for the first time.
“It’s a big step moving up to the Under 18’s category next season, but I feel like I’ve been in the Childrens category for ages, racing against the same people on the same slopes, so I’m really excited by the challenge,” explained Honor.
“I had a really great season last year, winning the British Championships in GS, a run of the slalom and coming 2nd in the opening SuperG race, so I know that I can ski fast in the races as well as in training. Me and my coaches worked really hard to try and improve my slalom technique and to change my skiing so I can generate more speed, and towards the end of the year everything really started to work well.”
As well as spending a 4th consecutive season as a member of the British Childrens Team, competing in International competitions for Team GB, Honor managed to balance her preparation for GCSE’s with a full time training schedule out at her training base in St Johann, Austria, alongside other member of the British Team. Honor, who at just 15 is the youngest member, and at present only female athlete, selected to the Great Britain Under 18 squad for 2014, was also selected as Great Britain’s Childrens representative to the 2013 World Alpine Championships in Schladming.
“I had some great experiences during my time in the Childrens category, including winning back to back Overall British Championships, but I’m looking forwards to next year and all the challenges it has to offer!”
