Richmondshire residents are once again being urged to nominate their unsung heroes for an award. The district council’s ‘Making a Difference in Richmondshire’ awards recognise individuals and businesses that have made a real difference to the area.
Now in its seventh year the scheme covers everything from volunteer, employee and carer of the year to business and community group of the year.
“There are so many people in the district who do remarkable things – often without giving it a second thought,” said Councillor John Blackie, Council Leader.
“Young and old they are a key part of life in Richmondshire and deserve to be recognised for their contributions. These awards give our unsung heroes the praise they so richly deserve, so please let us know if you know of a project, organisation or individual which is worthy of recognition even if you are unsure of which category it fits in to. All nominations received will be considered.”
Nominations are open in eight categories:
Young Person of the Year – for anyone up to the age of 25 who has positively contributed to their community, or gives their time for other people, causes or organisations in any way, shape or form
Volunteer of the Year – for anyone who volunteers their time for other people, causes or organisations in any way, shape or form and has positively contributed to the community
Carer of the Year – for anyone who deserves special recognition for the care they provide for a relative, friend or neighbour and whose valuable contribution and dedication helps improve the quality of life for other people
Community Group/Initiative of the Year – for groups of people who have come together to solve a problem or respond to an opportunity which has benefited their community
Sustainable Project of the Year – for any project which through an innovative initiative has tackled pressing social challenges that has and will continue to make a positive impact on the local community for years to come
Green Project of the Year – for projects, organisations or individuals whose forward-thinking solutions have made a significant contribution to sustainable development together with the conservation and protection of the natural environment within the District
Parish Council Project of the Year – for a Parish Council that has gone the extra mile to deliver for its residents an innovative project
Business of the Year – for any individuals/businesses who have, through their business endeavours, made a significant contribution to the local economy and/or encourages employee growth and development or provides apprentice placements/training that contributes to the development of the business and/or offers local people a chance to learn a trade with career prospects

The closing date for nominations is March 28. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in April
