Richmondshire District Council marked Commonwealth Day by raising a special flag earlier this week (Monday March 10).
It was one of over 300 flags raised as part of a new national event expressing commitment to the Commonwealth and its values of international cooperation, peace and security
As part of the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Council, Councillor Russell Lord.
read out a special commonwealth Affirmation and also a personal message from Her Majesty The Queen.
“This is the first time the council has celebrated Commonwealth Day in this way,” said Councillor Russell Lord who is pictured raising the flag.
“We are proud to fly the flag, just as many other councils are doing across the country. We hope that this marks the beginning of an initiative that will go from strength to strength with the inclusion of our schools and community groups and in future years and spread across all nations of the Commonwealth.
