An exhibition by award-winning photographer Bryn Lennon forms the centrepiece of The Station, Richmond’s celebrations to mark the Tour de France visiting Yorkshire.
Bryn, who was named Sports Photographer of the Year earlier this year, has selected twenty five of his favourite cycling photographs for the exclusive show, which runs from 23 June to 17 July.
The free exhibition is just one part of a programme of events being held at The Station over the coming weeks, as anticipation builds in advance of the world’s biggest cycling event descending on the Dales next month.
“We’re rebranding ourselves as ‘La Gare’,” explains Manager Melanie Cookson-Carter. “The Station is embracing the spirit of Le Tour, whilst breathing a slight sigh of relief that we’re not actually on the route itself! We’re going to be offering a taste of The Tour here in Richmond without the hassle of road closures and diversions for those people who would prefer to stay local while the race takes place, or who are unable to get up close to the action but still want to mark such an historic event.”
The Station will be transformed into La Gare from mid-June when Seasons restaurant offers a new menu of specials inspired by the French regions. Quiche, crepe and cassoulet are just some of the delights on offer every day until 26 July.
The Station’s artisan food and drink producers will be setting up their stalls outside The Station building on Saturday 28 June, offering a continental-style market between 10am and 3pm. Additional stalls are available to hire for other local producers to help create a Gallic ambience, with just seven days to go until race weekend.
Thanks to the generosity of Getty Images, the exhibition prints from Bryn Lennon’s ‘Taking the Tour’ exhibition will be for sale to raise funds for The Station charity. Bryn, who has been part Getty’s sports photography team since 2001, will also be giving a fundraising talk about his life behind the lens which has allowed him privileged access to many of the world’s elite sporting occasions and personalities. The event is being held at The Station on Wednesday 2 July at 11am. Tickets cost £5 and are available from The Station.
“I’m delighted to be able to support The Station’s ‘La Gare’ programme by bringing some of my photography to Richmond,” says Bryn. “I’ve been lucky enough to gain a fascinating insight into the Tour over the years, and being able to capture key moments from the back of an in-race motorbike is a real thrill. I’m looking forward to sharing some of my experiences as a sports photographer when I give my talk, just a few days before working at the race itself.”
On Saturday 5 July, whilst The Dales are a jumble of skinned knees, loose sheep and traffic jams, visitors to The Station will be able to relax at the après-Tour-wind-down-do. Seasons and The Richmond Brewing Company are hosting a laid back barbeque event in the picnic garden. Enjoy a beer and a burger, with live music between 4.30pm and 9pm.
