Tudor Comedy Attracts Author To Its Audience
A rock and roll musical that portrays the life of Henry VIII will be performed at Richmond’s Georgian Theatre Royal later this month in front of the play’s author.

Henry the Tudor Dude is the work of Yorkshire-born playwright – Kjartan Poskitt – and has been performed all over the world from New Zealand to Zimbabwe and Saudi Arabia to Kenya. As well as shows for the stage, he has also written the popular Murderous Maths series, the Urgum the Axeman novels and Agatha Parrot books.

Mr Poskitt will see the play at The Georgian Theatre Royal – the country’s oldest playhouse in its original form – when Henry the Tudor Dude is staged on Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 July. The play will be performed by the Georgian Theatre Royal’s award-winning Youth Theatre with a cast of around 40 young people, aged 8 to 18.

Sue Hedges, a Youth Theatre tutor and director and musical director of the play, is delighted to have such a distinguished guest in the audience. “We are all thrilled that Kjartan Poskitt is coming to see the show. He has been hugely supportive during the rehearsal period and has donated backing tracks for the play’s musical numbers.

“The cast and crew are really looking forward to performing in front of him and hopefully having the opportunity for some constructive feedback!” She added.

The play itself promises an entertaining portrayal of England’s most outrageous monarch, reflecting battles with France, the reformation of the church, umpteen executions and the fortunes of the infamous six wives – all told with hilarious dialogue, witty songs and more than a touch of playful cynicism.

The Georgian Theatre Royal Youth Theatre currently has over 180 members and introduces young people from 6 to 18-years-old to all areas of theatre and stagecraft.

Sessions will start again in September at Richmond, Leyburn and Colburn and anyone interested in getting involved should contact the Theatre on 01748 823710 or email: admin@georgiantheatreroyal.co.uk. Details can also be found on the Georgian Theatre Royal website www.georgiantheatreroyal.co.uk
