Flag Raised In Richmondshire For Holocaust Memorial Day
Wednesday, Jan 28, 2015
Richmondshire District Council marked national Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) by raising a special flag yesterday (Tuesday January 27)
Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is a time for everyone to remember the millions of people who have been murdered or whose lives have been changed beyond recognition during the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
“It is important that we continue to remember those whose lives were lost or permanently scarred by these atrocities,” said Chairman of the Council, Councillor Russell Lord (pictured raising the Holocaust Flag)
“The theme for 2015 ‘Keep The Memory Alive’ is particularly appropriate as it marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and 2015 is also the 20th anniversary of the Genocide in Srebrencia, Bosnia.
“HMD is about learning from the past to build a better future; it is about promoting equality, respect and understanding. We hope people used the day to take a step towards creating a safer, better future.”
