Local knitters were out in force at Richmond’s Georgian Theatre Royal – all in aid of the Christmas pantomime.

Scores of local people clutching needles and yellow wool joined in the challenge to knit 1000 bananas in time for the opening night of The Adventures of Sinbad that runs 8th December to 7th January. The theatre put out a plea by word of mouth and via facebook, email and twitter for knitters to create convincing-looking bananas that are soft to throw.

Knitters travelled to Richmond from all round the region to show their support, enjoy a chat and some banana cake. Florence Bland from Gunnerside said: “I was on the 7.15am bus from Gunnerside this morning to make sure I got here on time! Normally I knit squares for blankets to help the YMCA but this sounded like a bit of fun to help out the local panto.”

Theatre enthusiasts Dave Loveden and Elaine Coulson from Thirsk also came along, having booked tickets to see Sinbad and heard about the opportunity to get clicking.

Knitters from many local groups including The WI, The Station in Richmond, the Methodist Church and the U3A all got involved, meanwhile scores more people have been knitting at home having downloaded the pattern from the theatre’s website.

The theatre’s chief executive Kate Longmate said: “This has been a great community affair right from the start. Thanks to local knitters spreading the word we have also had family and friends from Hull, Worcester and even Australia joining in the fun and sending bananas in!”

Theatre volunteer and Richmond WI member Jen Capewell added: “A shield has been donated by Richmond’s CJ Lightfoot Jewellers for the ‘Most Prolific Banana Knitter 2011’. One lady has already knitted 30 but there are several hot contenders for the prize!”

The pattern is still available on the panto page of the theatre’s website, www.georgiantheatreroyal.co.uk and any further bananas can be handed into the box office or posted to the Georgian Theatre Royal in Victoria Road Richmond, DL10 4DW right up to the opening on 8th December.

Tickets for The Adventures of Sinbad  are on sale at the Theatre Box Office  Tel:  01748 825252.
