Volunteers Are Asked To ‘Knit And Natter’ For Panto
Local knitters are being invited to a ‘knit and natter’ morning at Richmond’s Georgian Theatre Royal on Wednesday 4 November to make leaves for the Christmas pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk.

The event will start at 10.00am and people of all knitting (and crocheting) abilities are welcome to drop by, have a chat and join in with the fun. Refreshments will be provided.

The finished leaves will be used to decorate a giant beanstalk in the Theatre that will be displayed throughout the festive period. The initiative follows a much-loved tradition of community-based craft campaigns connected to the pantomime. In 2011, over 1,000 bananas were knitted for The Adventures of Sinbad and the following year nearly 3,000 white snowball pompoms were amassed for Babes in the Wood.

Pantomime Production Manager, Tony Wilcock, said: “Our pantomime always involves the whole community and this year we are organising a range of activities including a children’s art competition aimed at nursery age upwards to events like this for adults. If previous years are anything to go by, this knitting morning should be hugely enjoyable. The Theatre staff are providing plenty of tea and coffee as well as baking cakes and there will be a real party atmosphere.”

Patterns will be provided on the day but if anyone can bring green or autumnal coloured wool and their own knitting needles then it would be much appreciated.

Those unable to attend the ‘knit and natter’ session will still be able to help make leaves by picking up a pattern at the Box Office or visiting the panto page on the Theatre’s website. Alternatively, people can make up their own designs. All shapes and sizes will be accepted! Finished leaves can be handed in at the Box Office or posted to The Georgian Theatre Royal on Victoria Road, Richmond, DL10 4DW. For enquiries, please call 01748 823710.

A trophy has been donated by Richmond’s C J Lightfoot jewellers for the ‘Most Prolific Leaf Knitter of 2015’.

Jack and the Beanstalk runs at The Georgian Theatre Royal from Saturday 5 December until Sunday 3 January 2016. Tickets from £7 to £21 are available from the Box Office on 01748 825252 or via the online booking service at www.georgiantheatreroyal.co.uk
