Author Returns to Richmond's Theatre to Launch New Book
Tuesday, Jul 17, 2012
Simon Armitage is returning to the Georgian Theatre Royal for the launch of his latest book, Walking Home, recounting his journey along the Pennine Way from Scotland to his home village in Yorkshire.
Join him in an evening of conversation, readings and film footage of his travels to find out how the journey ended.
In the Summer of 2010 Simon Armitage set out to tackle the Pennine Way. Walking Home is his account of that journey day by day, blow by blow, stride by stride. Attempting the 256 mile journey from North to South Simon walked through beautiful and bleak terrain, through howling wind towards the Yorkshire Village where he was born.
Without a penny in his pocket he paid his way with his poetry, stopping to give readings in village halls, churches, pubs, living rooms and passing around his ‘hat’ (walking sock) at the end of each performance.
It’s a story about Britain’s remote and overlooked interior, the wildness of its landscapes and the generosity of its communities. It’s nature writing but with people at its heart. It is a unique narrative from one of our most beloved writers.
Simon will be at the Georgian Theatre Royal on Saturday 21st July. For tickets and more information please contact the Box Office on 01748 825252.
