Brompton Lakes Wins its ‘Gold Medal’
At a time when everything is focussed on winning golds, Brompton Lakes – a development of luxury holiday lodges on the outskirts of Richmond – has once again received a coveted Five Star Gold Award from VisitEngland. This is the highest possible rating for tourism accommodation in this country.

Brompton Lakes was assessed at this level by the national tourist board when it first opened in 2008 and has kept the award, which is made annually, ever since.

In their report, the assessors said: “The lodges are constantly reviewed and refined to satisfy and surprise guests with exacting tastes – the same care that is taken with the interiors is devoted to the lakes and the grounds.”

The accommodation is scored in eight separate categories (exteriors, management efficiency, cleanliness, public areas, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen and additional facilities). The overall mark given to Brompton Lakes was 93%, which is well within the range of 87-100%, necessary to obtain the 5 stars. Full scores of 100% were achieved in two of these areas – management efficiency and cleanliness.

VisitEngland’s unique Gold and Silver awards are given in recognition of exceptional quality within a property's star rating, or for outperforming a star rating.

Set in 26 acres of private grounds, the Brompton Lakes development features 20 luxury lodge-style holiday homes with lake-side frontage and exclusive access and fishing rights to the River Swale.

The lodges are built using the very latest in green construction techniques with special features including living plant roofs, large solar gain glass panels and – one of the first of its kind in the UK – an innovative geo-thermal heating system which draws energy from the lakes themselves.

That Brompton Lakes is successful in meeting the expectations of a demanding target market is indicated by the high level of repeat bookings and there are already over 100 holders of the Brompton Lakes loyalty card, which is issued after three visits.

Owner of Brompton Lakes, Roy Stephenson, is delighted with the award. “It is extremely valuable to have this endorsement from an external organisation, especially one with such high credentials as VisitEngland. We work very hard to both improve our facilities and maintain the exacting standards that were established when the site opened and it is important to have an annual check to make sure that we are reaching our targets.”
