The future of Richmond Tourist Information Centre (TIC) and the public toilets adjoining the building is finally assured after a local leisure group steps in.
Following months of uncertainty Richmondshire Leisure Trust have agreed to maintain the Tourist Information Centre service and set up a new business within the building to offer extra facilities for tourists.
The trust, which was originally set up by Richmondshire District Council (RDC) in 2005 to manage Richmond Swimming Pool and the facilities at Richmond School, took over the premises on the 1st August.
They plan to redevelop the building, with funds from RDC, so that they can offer cycle, wheelchair and mobility scooter hire, showers, storage and laundry services for tourists and walkers and an internet cafe.
The public toilets adjacent to the building have already been upgraded and are now open for use during the TIC's opening hours.
Hilda Ellis, who is continuing her role as manager of the TIC, said: "All of us here are looking forward to forging a close working relationship with the Leisure Trust and continuing to offer an exceptional service to our customers."
The TIC is open 9.30am to 4.30pm each day and 10am to 4pm on Sundays, and is manned by qualified and experienced volunteers providing extensive tourist information.
