Folk Band Celebrate Forty Years of Singing the Dales
A local folk band are celebrating their fortieth anniversary with a special celebratory concert and an exclusive art exhibition at Richmond's theatre this month.

Formed in 1972, the band Fourum, will be appearing at the Georgian Theatre Royal on Friday 21st September at 7:30 pm.

Over the forty years in which they have been going, the band have taken their music to a range of venues across the region. Fourum has claimed its own unique place in the areas music tradition by building its musical repertoire on self-penned songs which capture the history, folk-lore, characters and traditions of Swaledale and the surrounding area. Interwoven with traditional folk material their fortieth anniversary concert promises to be a memorable evening.

There is also a free art exhibition in the theatre that coincides with the concert, which celebrates the life and talents of one of Fourum’s founder members, Bob Hattersley, who passed away in 2010. After Bob’s death a treasure trove of previously unseen maps was discovered by his wife. Bob produced ‘Wainwright’ style maps of areas in the North East which captured his interest.

The maps are being exhibited at the Georgian Theatre Royal throughout September and all profits from the prints will be donated towards research into the cause, diagnosis and effective treatment of Kidney Cancer, the disease which caused Bob’s death.

Speaking about the evening, band member Jim Jack said: “The original songs about the Dales which we sing are based on the research which underpins Bob's maps. We are looking forward to the opportunity to sing once again in the Georgian on such a notable occasion for us as a band. Anyone coming along on the 21st will hear quite a number of songs that they know already, but there will be one or two surprise twists as well, including a world premiere!!  It's going to be a unique occasion.”

Ever the optimists, Fourum originally titled this anniversary concert ‘Fourum-the Next Forty Years’ before settling on a more accurate ‘Fourum at Forty.’  If you would like tickets to see Fourum or you would like to view the art exhibition then please contact the theatre's Box Office on 01748 825252 or visit for more information.
