On 11th November, The Station in Richmond transported visitors back The Victorian era with their special 10th birthday event, A Victorian Intrigue!
A free day out for the whole family, the event aimed to celebrate the successes of the last ten years whilst thanking the people of Richmondshire for their support.
The event took place on the Platform throughout the day and showcased performances from Storyteller Irene Lofthouse, Illusionist Steel Johnson, puppeteer Martin Thorpe and Richmond Operatic Society, who performed some numbers from their upcoming production of Scrooge!
The winner of The Station’s Grand Raffle was announced as Jean Slater from Stockton. She wins the original Sue Dewhurst painting of The Station.
The winner of The Station’s ‘design a birthday cake’ local schools competition was also announced. Serena, aged 8, was presented with her design made into a 3D cake by staff from Angel’s Share Bakery. Serena also won book tokens for herself and her school.
Local greengrocers, Neeps and Tatties provided roasted chestnuts & hot soup for visitors. There was also an opportunity to watch a free screening of Brief Encounter at The Station Cinema, dress up in Victorian clothes, have a photo in front of a specially commissioned backdrop, take part in Victorian crafts & games and handle Victorian artefacts (thanks to Richmondshire Museum).
Communications Coordinator Jemma Holliday – “We had a fantastic day celebrating our tenth birthday. We had lots of families who stayed all day and soaked up the atmosphere, enjoying our building and the variety of businesses here. It was so lovely to see the smiles on the faces of all the families enjoying the activities and performances – the staff very much enjoyed them too! Thanks go to everyone who helped to make the day such a success. We look forward to organising more events in the near future.”
Upcoming events at The Station include free children’s Christmas crafts on 3rd December, ‘Making Spirits Bright’ – a late night shopping event at The Shop on 6th December (see thestation.co.uk for details) and Reeth Brass Band on 17th December. This plus upcoming art exhibitions from Arts Collective Take 8 and Rebecca Jayne.
