Local bookworms have prompted the expansion of a reading group, due to its overwhelming popularity.
The Station, in Richmond, launched a Wednesday book group in October last year. It proved an immediate success, with an instant waiting list.
“There was more demand than I'd expected for the first group, explains volunteer Jenny Boulds. “It took me by surprise. We’ve not a run a book group here before, so wanted to make sure it worked. We’re really pleased to have had enough interest to now be able to launch the Thursday group; welcoming more people into the building to indulge, and share, their passion for reading.”
The groups are free to join, however, members are encouraged to donate £2 at each monthly meeting, which benefits The Station. Jenny chooses the titles for the initial three meetings, then the groups create their own reading list based on members’ suggestions.
"I’ve always loved reading, but you tend to get stuck in a rut – reading the same type of things,” says new book group member, Pat Irving. “With a book group you get taken out of your comfort zone and I think I will be reading a much wider variety of books as a result. I’m really looking forward to discovering new authors and talking to the other members of the group about what we’ve read. I’m sure there will be lots of lively discussion!”
