Call To Action - Local Male Singers Wanted For REFRAIN
Sunday - February 19, 2017
Verity Standen, a composer, performer and musical director based in Bristol, is joining forces with producers, Situations, to find male singers to take part in REFRAIN, taking place between the 7th and 9th of April.

With auditions starting in early March, the chosen singers will be central to the special event, held at Richmond Castle, where audiences will be invited to explore the castle as never before, as voices resonate around the site.

This unique production follows a successful 2016 for Verity, who won the Off West End TBC Award for her immersive choral piece HUG. She will be continuing her practice of not using written music, and intends to teach all the vocals by ear.

David Pisaro, a choir director and vocal coach involved with the production, said: "REFRAIN is all about filling an amazing site with the sound of voices. For this project, Verity is focusing on the sound and texture of male voices.

"We expect a big range of experiences, from men who have sung in choirs for decades to men who’ve never sung outside their own shower.

"If you come along to the open workshops, you’re not making any commitment. They’re a friendly opportunity to meet with Verity, try some singing and find out whether the project is right for you.

"Also, this is an opportunity for men, whether or not they have any experience of singing, to come together for an extraordinary arts event."

Helping to inspire Verity's composition will be the history of Richmond Castle, and in particular the stories of the conscientious objectors, the Richmond Sixteen.

David continued: "REFRAIN is not about conscientious objection, but it is inspired by the stories of these men.

"Producers, Situations, will be curating a series of events around the production, including talks, debates, and films, to discuss what conscientious objection means to us today. We would love for the participating singers to join these talks, and to help consider how this special music event offers a different way to think of history."

To register your interest, or ask any questions, please email David Pisaro: davidmpisaro@hotmail.com. Please include your name, where you are based, and any singing experience you have (but don’t worry if it’s none).

Important dates:
  • 6th & 7th March: Open evening workshops – drop in and find out more about the project.
  • 18th & 19th March: Rehearsal weekend – start learning the music, coached by Verity and her team of professional singers.
  • 1st – 6th April: Rehearsals – bringing the piece to life on site at the castle (sessions will be designed to fit around working hours).
  • 7th – 9th April: Public performances across the weekend.
You will need to attend the majority of rehearsals and be available for most  (ideally all) performances.
