Richmondshire Green Awards 2010
The second Richmondshire Green Awards have been run by the Richmondshire Local Strategic Partnership, Green Living task group. There were four categories to demonstrate outstanding green initiatives in the district. In presenting the awards Cllr Melva Steckles, Chairman of the Local Strategic Partnership, said "I am delighted to be able to present these prestigeous awards to the worthy winners in 2010. It is important that we congratulate the hard work that has gone into these initiatives and celebrate their success".
The Raydale Project - Community category winner - this is a multi faceted project that includes four elements - saving Semerwater an environmental project to protect water levels in the lake and to provide sustainable visitor facilities. Also, conserving 500 ha of degraded peatland, cutting back fertiliser use to reduce pollution and the River Bain Hydro scheme, Deborah Millward.
Tiptoe Business category winner - this is a small green energy services company that opened this year at Aske Hall. It offers no nonsense advice on the latest renewable technologies and will assess carbon footprints, energy requirements and will install environmentally friendly products, Tim Longstaff.
Just the Job, Youth and Education category winner - formed in 2004 this social enterprise not only trains youngsters with special needs in horticulture skills but grows its own food, composts waste, plants trees and continually assists with nature conservation, Julie D'Arcy.
Brompton Lakes, winner Sustainable Tourism - set in 26 acres of privately owned land this is an environmentally friendly lodge style development of 20 holiday lets. This has provided not only a top quality holiday destination, but has adopted the latest technology in green construction, Kate Richardson.
Business highly commended - the judges were also particularly impressed with a novel idea from the Richmond firm, the City Secret of hibernating computers when not in use, which saved electricity and the company £2,000 annually, Sophie Hazel.
