Garget Walker House is a Day Support Centre for people diagnosed with various forms of dementia.
We offer personalised care with trained staff and volunteers in a relaxing, homely and safe environment.
This will include:
an opportunity to meet and mix with others
stimulation through social contact and meaningful activities
an opportunity to pursue personal hobbies and social activities either in the day centre or in the community
refreshments and a 2 course meal
support with personal care as part of your care plan.
The day care service aims to ensure that you:
feel you have been able to take part in enjoyable activities
feel you have been able to maintain and learn new skills, hobbies and interests
feel less isolated
feel valued, positive and independent
feel that attending day support has enabled you to stay living in your own home and local community
feel that crisis situations may have been prevented
feel that your care and support plan has been successful in achieving what you want from it.
Our service users enjoy a wide range of activities at the centre.
We offer exercise sessions most days, and yoga classes a few times a month.
Our service users participate in a variety of games, both indoor and outdoor, from active floor games to the more traditional board games, bingo and dominoes, with a wealth of other games in between.
For the more active service users we also have pool, table tennis and bowling.
Alternatively, some people prefer to keep up with past hobbies and crafts, or learn new ones, and so we also offer activities such as knitting, tapestry, basic construction projects, drawing & painting and other arts and crafts projects.
Activities are person centred around service users preferences and abilities, often with several activities taking place at the same time.
We aim to provide an environment in which people can enjoy socialising in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
We endeavour to offer a varied entertainment program at the day centre, with a mix of local and national entertainers.
We typically have one headline entertainer a month, with other more local entertainers throughout the rest of the month. These range from individual vocalists, instrumental and singing duo's, keyboard and vocal individuals to storytellers, magicians and an indoor visiting minature pony. We are even having a pantomine this year!
We also have a regular visiting PAT dog, who is always great favourite with the people attending the day centre.
Garget Walker House provides a Community Transport service, which is available free of charge by our volunteer drivers if required.
This is made possible by Friends of Garget Walker House, a group who fundraise year round to provide this service, and also equipment, activity supplies and entertainment for the day centre.
We also have a mobile hairdressing service available at Garget Walker House, and appointments can be made either through the staff or directly with the hairdresser.
If you are wondering if day care is for you, then come and have a coffee and a chat with us at Garget Walker House. Alternatively, why not book a taster session where you can meet the team and get an idea of the activities our service users enjoy, without any commitment.
Garget Walker House is open Monday - Friday from 10am - 3pm
Referrals to Garget Walker House can be made via the Community Mental Health Team, GP, Adult Social Care, or self-referrals if privately funded.
There is a charge for our day support service. Please contact Yvette Peary on the details below for further information on our services and pricing.
