Time: 7pm
Saint Francis Xavier School presents The Wiz! A musical adaptation of 'The Wizard of Oz'

Pupils at Saint Francis Xavier School, Richmond present The Wiz, 10th-12th July at 7pm.

THE WIZ is a soul musical retelling of L Frank Baum’s classic children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. When Dorothy is swept up in a storm and lands in a strange land called Oz, she is sent on a journey down the yellow brick road to meet the mighty Wiz who might just be able to send her home again. On the way she meets Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion who could all benefit from a trip to see the Wiz too. What follows is a journey of self-discovery for Dorothy and her new friends as they learn they are more capable than they believe.
The school production features a cast of 40 pupils aged between 11-15 and is directed by English and Drama teacher, Claire Smith. The production features a thirteen-piece professional band led by Musical Director and school Head of Music Chris Rodaway, whilst fellow teacher Catherine Knight has taken responsibility for choreography.
THE WIZ was conceived by Sam Bobrick, Charlie Smalls and William F Brown, who originally set the musical in the context of African-American culture. The production opened on Broadway in 1975 with an all-black cast and went on to win seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The production was made into a film by Universal Pictures and Motown Productions, with Diana Ross playing the lead character of Dorothy, and Michael Jackson in the role of the Scarecrow. A live television adaptation of THE WIZ was aired on NBC in 2015.

The Georgian Theatre Royal Youth Theatre - Scary Play and Mobile Phone Show

Scary Play by Judith Johnson

The twins are having a birthday sleepover; as night draws in, the group attempts to scare the living daylights out of each other. Kal recounts the legend of a local house, said to be haunted by the ghost of a strange old lady who once lived there. The evening takes a terrifying turn when they challenge each other to sneak into the house, but what is lurking in the upstairs bedroom?

Mobile Phone Show by Jim Cartwright

A communication cacophony, a fully charged chorus line of chaos in a rhapsody of text, tweet and gabble. Jim Cartwright wrote Mobile Phone Show after spending time with young people who explained the significance of their relationships with their phones. With 80% of school age children spending on average 90 minutes a day on their phones, this challenging play explores the vital messages they can send.

RADS presents this popular work by Alan Ayckbourn.

He soon has to succumb to blackmail because of his daughter, and this is only the first in a series of moral compromises he will have to make. Jack and his family unwittingly find themselves on a path from simple misdemeanours to murder.

Alan Ayckbourn’s riotous exposure of entrepreneurial greed won the London Evening Standard Drama Award for Best Play.
