A Call To Arms – Volunteers Needed For Uniform Display Project
Tuesday - April 4, 2017
A museum in Richmond is appealing for volunteers to help with a new project.

The Green Howards Museum is planning to re-display 40 of its uniforms, but needs help creating the special mannequins which will make them look their best.

“All the uniforms we currently have on show in the museum are being treated to a brand new bespoke figure,” explains Collections Assistant, Zoë Utley.  “Not only does it create an even better display for museum visitors, but it also helps conserve the uniform, enabling it to keep its shape and ensuring it is correctly supported.”

Volunteers are needed to sew padding onto the base mannequin, and create made-to-measure arms and legs for each item of uniform.  There will also be the opportunity to work in the museum’s costume store; labelling and packing items and helping with documentation and updating the relevant records in the archive.

There will be a training session with a costume display professional at the end of May, with the creation of the new body display shapes taking place in July.

“As a volunteer on this project you will have the chance to handle 18th and 19th century uniforms, which are usually kept well out reach for very good reason,” adds Zoe.  “If you have an interest in textiles or sewing, this is a great opportunity to be part of something special; helping us ensure our precious uniforms are displayed to best effect for years to come.”
Anyone who is interested in volunteering for the project should contact the museum on 01748 826561, or email
