A Richmond community website is celebrating its 20th anniversary, after two decades of helping promote the market town to an international audience.
Richmond Online, built and maintained by web designer Andrew Russell, first launched in 1999 after Andrew saw the need for a community and news-based website.
Andrew, who runs the website alongside his web design company, Moonburst, said, “I realised that the use of the Internet was expanding at an extremely rapid rate, and wanted Richmond to be part of that.
“For such an important historical town, we needed a website that would help promote it to a global audience, while also constantly updating residents with news, events, and local businesses.“
Initially, Andrew was aided by a group made up of the Town Council, Richmond Business and Tourism Association, and the Richmond Partnership. When the Richmond Online group disbanded years later, Andrew continued the website through Moonburst.
Now a hugely successful website portal, Richmond Online boasts hundreds of thousands of annual visitors, as well as a host of local businesses using its resources to advertise.
Councillor Stuart Parsons said, “Richmond Online is an amazingly useful tool for residents and visitors alike, our town has had many years of positive and enduring rewards from this fabulous website. Here’s to the next 20, and thank you Mr Russell and Moonburst.”
With the addition of successful social media pages for Richmond Online, a partnership with Welcome to Richmond, and an ever-expanding stream of local businesses advertising their accommodation or services, the website continues to be a powerful community portal.
