Richmond's Easby Choir Stalls feature in many books and pictorial surveys, but they are far from well-known even in Richmond itself, though part of St Mary's Parish Church. But their story, and the trail that leads to their fascinating woodwork and rich – if at times inappropriate – carvings, is most intriguing. Just why were these Choir Stalls originally installed in St Agatha's Abbey at Easby?

Why on earth were they then translated to Richmond's Parish Church? Once there, how were they subsequently used? And, most intriguing of all, are the present Richmond Easby Choir Stalls those that were commissioned from and carved by William Bromflet, the Ripon master craftsman, about 1520?
