Staying cool

Staying cool

News

There's a week of hot, hot weather ahead, and the cool, cool waters of the River Swale are calling!

At this time of year you'll find crowds of visitors on the riverside meadows, sunning themselves and picnicking. Many will also be bathing. The Environment Agency has just designated a stretch of the Swale as a recognised bathing site, so you can be confident that the water quality is officially monitored. It's a wonderful spot to relax, catch some rays, and splash around.

But take care! The area just below the famous waterfalls has deep, cold pools, swirling currents, and hidden shallows. On a hot day, you may see young daredevils (they're mainly young) leaping into the water, sometimes doing stylish back-flips. Not a good idea... Almost every year there's an accident, and a young life is ruined.

Such accidents are so easily avoided. If you're visiting our river on a hot day, please enjoy the cool water - but don't take risks at the waterfall! We want you to enjoy your visit, and to come back.
