What's On

There's never a dull moment in Richmond...

There’s always something to do and somewhere to go in Richmond. With the unique Georgian Theatre Royal plus the award-winning independent cinema at The Station, drama and cinema are well taken care of, and then there’s the sparkling events programme at the Green Howards Museum, as well as Richmond Castle and the Richmondshire Museum.

The town’s many choirs and two orchestras offer up regular concerts, alongside the Richmondshire Concert Series in Spring and Autumn bringing in world-class chamber ensembles, while there’s plenty of live music at The Comrades Club and at many of the town’s great pubs. Richmond’s festivals are amazingly diverse, from the lively performance scene at MayFest to the delights of both “books and boots” at September’s Walking and Book Festival - never mind the epic Duck Race on the Swale.

Craft markets, health and wellbeing events, every kind of community group you can think of, talks, walks… you’ll always find something to enjoy.

The Ceilide is a unique tongue-in-cheek record of the history of the Regiment during ‘Operation Banner’ from the notes written by the Officers, Senior NCO’s and Soldiers who were there.

The book documents all versions of the regiment’s tour newsletter. Written from the first tour in 1970 on double sided A4 foolscap to the final tour in 2004 when enlightened editors produced colour magazines.

The books comprises A4, 616 pages, hardback, with every tour and deployment in chronological order, featuring hundreds of photographs, stories, poems and even work commitments.

This, the second book in the Operation Banner, Green Howards in Ulster series, is proudly dedicated to all those who served, but especially the Green Howards, many of whom are now, sadly, no longer with us. This is not only the story of a regiment, it is their story, each and every one of them, from every rank and in every role, told in their own words and images; a unique record of our service and time in Northern Ireland as part of ‘Operation Banner’.

Books will be for sale subject to availability directly from Tom or via The Green Howards Museum gift shop.

For any copies already reserved with Tom, these can be collected from The Green Howards Museum on Saturday 9th May.

Entry to the Green Howards Museum is free for all Green Howards on Saturday 9th & 10th May. Usual admission charges apply for guests and family members.
