What's On

There's never a dull moment in Richmond...

There’s always something to do and somewhere to go in Richmond. With the unique Georgian Theatre Royal plus the award-winning independent cinema at The Station, drama and cinema are well taken care of, and then there’s the sparkling events programme at the Green Howards Museum, as well as Richmond Castle and the Richmondshire Museum.

The town’s many choirs and two orchestras offer up regular concerts, alongside the Richmondshire Concert Series in Spring and Autumn bringing in world-class chamber ensembles, while there’s plenty of live music at The Comrades Club and at many of the town’s great pubs. Richmond’s festivals are amazingly diverse, from the lively performance scene at MayFest to the delights of both “books and boots” at September’s Walking and Book Festival - never mind the epic Duck Race on the Swale.

Craft markets, health and wellbeing events, every kind of community group you can think of, talks, walks… you’ll always find something to enjoy.

Step into the story of one family during the First World War.

Join Robert Dransfield in this museum talk as he shares the powerful history of the Simpson Bell family, including the life of 2nd Lt Donald Simpson Bell VC and the moving memories preserved by his sister Dorothy. Featuring original letters from the front, photographs, and personal insights from Harrogate, this is a rare and intimate look at life during wartime.

Donald Simpson Bell is the only professional footballer to have been awarded a Victoria Cross.

This presentation is based on Rob’s book, Memories from the River Stones, which captures the story of Annie and Smith Bell and their eight children, most notably Donald Simpson Bell, a Green Howard who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery at the Battle of the Somme. The book is illustrated by Roger Chapman of the Green Howards and will be available to purchase on the evening.

Based on the book 'Memories from the River Stones' (available to purchase on the night).

£15.00 per person, includes a drink and museum entry!

Don’t miss this unique and personal journey into the past.
