A valuable new resource for walkers and visitors to Richmondshire has officially opened in the village of Hudswell. St Michael’s Lodge, a 16-bed hostel created through the transformation of the historic St Michael’s Church, is now open for bookings – providing welcome accommodation in this popular rural destination.

Developed by Hudswell Community Charity, the hostel offers a warm and affordable base for those exploring the Yorkshire Dales and the surrounding countryside. Its launch marks a significant step forward in supporting sustainable tourism and rural life in the region.

The building has been beautifully repurposed to include modern and comfortable facilities while preserving much of its character and charm. Guests at St Michael’s Lodge can enjoy shared bedrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, a lounge, a meeting room, and drying facilities – all tailored to the needs of walkers, cyclists, and group travellers.

St Michael’s Lodge was officially opened on last month by Yorkshire Vet Julian Norton, with over 200 people attending the community celebration.

The development is the latest in a series of successful community-led projects by Hudswell Community Charity, which also manages affordable housing in the village. The hostel was part-funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Community Ownership Fund, enabling the transformation of a disused place of worship into a vibrant and practical community asset.

hA visit from local MP Rishi Sunak during the opening week provided further recognition of the project’s impact.

With increasing demand for visitor accommodation in the Richmond area – especially among walkers using the Coast to Coast route or exploring Swaledale – St Michael’s Lodge is set to become a vital hub for those discovering the natural beauty and heritage of the area.
