Richmond is a great base for a visit: a handsome old town, with independent shops, friendly inns, and a legend round every corner.

One of the best things about Richmond - and we don't mind saying this - is that it's so easy to get out and explore our neighbourhood. That's what you want from a base, isn't it?

Our neighbourhood is called Swaledale. This narrow, winding valley stretches from the wind-swept moorland of Nine Standards Rigg, on the watershed of the Pennine Hills, down through little stone-built hamlets, past caves and mines and the village of Reeth with its huge green and the famous Swaledale Festival, and on beneath the looming bulk of Richmond Castle into the broad plains of the Vale of Mowbray.

A rich landscape like Swaledale is full of stories. Who better to collect them than Joe Willis, a local journalist with years of experience on the local paper? 'Swaledale: An Insider's Guide' pictures the dale through the voices of the people who live and work in this wild northern dale.

This book was a bargain when it came out just a couple of years ago at £5.95. Now, thanks to some thrifty printing, Richmond Information Centre can offer it at just £3. It's the perfect preparation for a visit to Richmond, and the perfect gift for a Dales-lover.

Click here to order 'Swaledale' at our online shop. Or pick up a copy at Richmond Information Centre when you're here. It's fascinating reading!
