"Old waters keep the land alive"

Join the efforts to protect Yorkshire's rivers

Old River Rhyme of Yorkshire

From Wharfe to Ouse, the waters glide,
Through dales and fields, so deep and wide.
The Aire flows swift with ancient song,
Where mills once turned the whole day long.

The Derwent winds through woodland green,
A mirror to the hills serene.
The Swale runs clear with sparkling cheer,
Through valleys wild and meadows near.

The Ure joins in with gentle grace,
A winding thread through Yorkshire’s face.
And Tees roars down with power bold,
Its story in the rocks is told.

So let these rivers ever run,
Beneath the Yorkshire sky and sun.
Old waters keep the land alive,
Where nature’s heart will long survive.

First launched in 2005 alongside the United Nations' "Water for Life Decade" by Mark Angelo, a noted Canadian river conservationist, the 2026 World Rivers Day falls on Sunday 27 September.

Our local campaigning group, Save our Swale, is encouraging us all to get involved, taking inspiration from The Sewage Campaign Network.

They will celebrate here in RIchmond by commencing a new season of water quality monitoring and reporting on it. Citizen scientists standing up for the river Swale!
