A family's perspective

A powerful and deeply personal account of one family’s experience during the First World War will be shared this June at a special evening talk at the Green Howards Museum.

“Remembering 2nd Lt Donald Simpson Bell” will be presented by Robert Dransfield, grandson of Dorothy Bell and great-nephew of 2nd Lieutenant Donald Simpson Bell VC. Offering a unique and intimate perspective, the talk will explore the lives of the Simpson Bell family before, during, and in the aftermath of the war.

At the heart of the story is Dorothy Bell, who was still a teenager when her brothers went to fight in France. She endured significant personal loss, including the death of her brother Donald at the Battle of the Somme, as well as two cousins. Her husband later suffered the lasting effects of gas exposure during the war, contributing to his early death.

Dorothy carefully preserved her memories throughout her life, keeping Donald’s photograph on display and safeguarding the letters he sent home from the front. These original handwritten letters, alongside diary entries, photographs, and family recollections, form the foundation of this compelling talk.

Robert Dransfield will also provide insight into the family’s life in Harrogate, including their home on East Parade, and will bring with him original documents that offer a rare glimpse into wartime experiences through a personal lens.

The presentation draws on Rob’s book, Memories from the River Stones, which tells the story of Annie and Smith Bell and their eight children, including Donald Simpson Bell—a member of the Green Howards who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his extraordinary bravery at the Battle of the Somme. The book, illustrated by Roger Chapman of the Green Howards, will be available for purchase on the evening.

This event offers a unique opportunity to connect with history through authentic voices and personal storytelling.
