What's On

There's never a dull moment in Richmond...

There’s always something to do and somewhere to go in Richmond. With the unique Georgian Theatre Royal plus the award-winning independent cinema at The Station, drama and cinema are well taken care of, and then there’s the sparkling events programme at the Green Howards Museum, as well as Richmond Castle and the Richmondshire Museum.

The town’s many choirs and two orchestras offer up regular concerts, alongside the Richmondshire Concert Series in Spring and Autumn bringing in world-class chamber ensembles, while there’s plenty of live music at The Comrades Club and at many of the town’s great pubs. Richmond’s festivals are amazingly diverse, from the lively performance scene at MayFest to the delights of both “books and boots” at September’s Walking and Book Festival - never mind the epic Duck Race on the Swale.

Craft markets, health and wellbeing events, every kind of community group you can think of, talks, walks… you’ll always find something to enjoy.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's popular musical.

Carousel tells the story of carousel barker Billy Bigelow and mill worker Julie Jordan. They meet and fall in love but, unfortunately, things go downhill from there.

Billy's desperation makes him violent against those he loves most and he falls in with con man Jigger Craigin. He ends up getting caught in the midst of an armed robbery and takes his own life.

Fifteen years later, Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day when he encounters Louise, the daughter he never knew. Louise is a lonely teenager - her father's reputation having haunted her throughout her young life.

Is Billy able to instil in both child and her mother a sense of hope?

Music by Richard Rodgers. Book and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Based on Fereng Molnar's play Liliom as adapted by Benjamin F Glazer. Original dances by Agnes de Mille. An amateur production by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd on behalf of R&H Theatricals.
