What's On

There's never a dull moment in Richmond...

There’s always something to do and somewhere to go in Richmond. With the unique Georgian Theatre Royal plus the award-winning independent cinema at The Station, drama and cinema are well taken care of, and then there’s the sparkling events programme at the Green Howards Museum, as well as Richmond Castle and the Richmondshire Museum.

The town’s many choirs and two orchestras offer up regular concerts, alongside the Richmondshire Concert Series in Spring and Autumn bringing in world-class chamber ensembles, while there’s plenty of live music at The Comrades Club and at many of the town’s great pubs. Richmond’s festivals are amazingly diverse, from the lively performance scene at MayFest to the delights of both “books and boots” at September’s Walking and Book Festival - never mind the epic Duck Race on the Swale.

Craft markets, health and wellbeing events, every kind of community group you can think of, talks, walks… you’ll always find something to enjoy.

Following the First World War, beginning in 1920, veterans began marching in Richmond to maintain bonds and remember fallen comrades. The parade typically moves to the town’s War Memorial in Frenchgate before a special service in St Mary’s church. Although the regiment amalgamated in 2006 into the Yorkshire Regiment, the weekend keeps the Green Howards identity alive, highlighting their service from the Battle of Malplaquet to modern conflicts.

It’s also a chance for colleagues to rekindle, commemorate, and celebrate their memories in armed forces. The Yorkshire Regiment turns out to show their pride, along with the up and coming cadets. It’s truly a spectacle worth seeing.

The Parade – Sunday 10th.

A parade take place on the Sunday which is always a fantastic spectacle. It will form in Nuns Close car park at 11.00 a.m.

Then the parade will march from Nuns Close car park to St Mary’s Church via Hurgill Road, Victoria Road, Queens Road and Pottergate to the Regimental War Memorial at Frenchgate Head.  A wreath will be laid on the Memorial with the Last Post and Reveille sounded.  The parade will then fallout for members to make their way down Frenchgate to St Mary’s Church.

At the conclusion of the Church Service, the parade will reform on Frenchgate and then proceed via Dundas Street and Queens Road into Friary Gardens.  The Green Howards Representative Colonel will take the Salute outside the old Post Office building (Ralph Fitz Randal Wetherspoon) on Queens Road.

Come along and support the veterans of this historic regiment, rich with heritage and legacy.

The museum and shop will be open on Sunday 9th and 10th May so you can watch the parade and then come in to see our new football exhibition.
